New Lock Gates for Whilton to Buckby Flight

The attached photos, courtesy of John Highmore (CRT Volunteering Communications Manager – Secondment) were taken at the CRT workshops at Stanley Ferry, near Wakefield/Leeds. They include new lock gates for Lock 10 in the Whilton to Buckby flight.

We will keep you posted about their installation date during the 2015/16 Winter Stoppage Programme. They will need painting of course! Watch this space!

WBLA Work Alongside the Braunston Canal Society

A few members from WBLA joined forces with the Braunston Canal Society on 21st March making a total of 23 volunteers who cleared over a quarter of a mile of overgrown pathway, known as Fir Path, close to the eastern portal of Braunston Tunnel.

Some of the group concentrated on cutting back brambles and overgrown trees so that the pathway could be restored to its natural width which is now wide enough for a fire engine to drive down should the need occur. A considerable amount of litter was also collected and bagged for disposal by CRT.

A number of local residents expressed an interest in helping to clear the remainder of the area and a further working party will be organized soon.

Volunteers Urgently Required

Following its adoption under the stewardship of the Canal and River Trust (CRT) the Whilton and Buckby Locks Association (WBLA) urgently requires new volunteers to tend the local stretch of canal and locks on the Grand Union Canal in Northamptonshire.

WBLA has recently purchased a top of the range hedge trimmer. A number of members have been assessed as competent users of both hedge trimmers and strimmers by CRT and a working party of volunteers has been busy tidying up part of the hedgerow along a section of the towpath.

New volunteers are invited to continue the work and participate in other working parties to maintain and improve the environment along the flight including lock painting, gardening and the upkeep of a nature reserve.
